Major Voices is a youth choir established in 2012 in a school music classroom in Khayelitsha, by four inspiring young men. They had the vision to use music to empower and motivate their community against crime, unemployment, and drugs. Growing up in a challenging, underprivileged environment and endured hardships and struggles themselves, the four classmates wanted to initiate change by taking to the streets with song and dance. Major Voices began as a choir of four. They gradually grew to nine, performing different styles of music, including Acappella, Isicathamiya, Afro Gospel, and Jazz, all mixed with dance. They incorporate a variety of different instruments into their performances, including djembe, guitar, and drums.
Over the years, the choir has positively influenced their communities and are a symbol of hope through their musical expression. To eradicate unemployment, and inspire others to utilize their musical talents, the choir perform as buskers at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, private and corporate functions, and at NGO tourist institutions. Their mission to entertain and engage though soulful, interactive music and dance, has awarded them the opportunity of performing on several national and international stages. To quote the choir, “Major Voices is more than just a choir. It’s the future”.
