Christina Kaba, Abalimi’s farming movement leader, founded Moya we Khaya meaning “Spirit Of Home” in isiXhosa, in 2014. One hectare in size, it is situated next to the Manyanani Peace Park in Khayelitsha, the first-ever community park established in the townships of Cape Town in 1995, also led by Mama Christina Kaba. Moya comprises approximately 12 micro-farmers, young and old.
The first community garden in the movement is to prove that young farmers can create viable micro-farming enterprises and inspire others to follow suit. Moya produces a variety of seasonal organic vegetables such as spinach, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot, aubergine, etc. and different types of herbs, i.e., mint, parsley, basil, thyme, rosemary and more. Moya also started an Oyster Mushroom project that employs four young people. The production process from cloning to harvesting takes about 75 days, and the Oyster Mushroom project sees a weekly production of more than 7kg that are sold in 50 to 100g to customers around Cape Town.
