Cape Town Opera (CTO) youth development and education program conduct various activities throughout the year in low-income rural and urban areas. Khayelitsha, Retreat, Vredenburg, Philippi, Gugulethu, Wynberg, and the outlying regions across South Africa. Social ills ravage these areas as a result of the destructive cycle of poverty every generation endures. The projects include working with and allowing learners but also singers, choreographers, directors, composers, sign-language interpreters, and coordinators.
The flagship program “Opera is My First Language” presents the youth with an alternate lifestyle, developing their hidden talents and promoting a life of self-worth and dignity. CTO singers travel to rural communities to teach music to high school learners for the annual ABC Motsepe SASCE competition (South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod). These workshops are the only classical music education program of its kind. All CTO’s youth development activities are provided to the beneficiaries free of charge thanks to the generous support of the company’s donors.
