Learn to Earn (LTE) is a skills development and job creation non-profit organization founded in 1989. The initiative develops social and economic skills, and emotional and spiritual awareness for unemployed individuals, within the communities of Khayelitsha and Hermanus. In an act to eradicate unemployment, LTE restores hope, dignity, and self-respect of unemployed people through market-relevant skills training, job creation, and business incubation projects. Their vision is to build a nation where everyone has access to economic opportunities and the chance to provide for themselves and their families. Having trained more than 14,000 unemployed people since 1989 from their four training centers in the Western Cape, Learn to Earn offers short courses in a variety of skills, always combined with life skills, personal finance, and spiritual development. The principle of giving people a ‘hand up not a handout’ and the confidence to succeed in the working world underpins their activities. Over 83% of their graduates have become economically active, with more than 20% starting their businesses.
