Philisa Abafazi Bethu, “Heal our Women” in isiXhosa is a non-profit organization established in 2008 in the community of Lavender Hill. With an estimated population of 100,000 people comprising five informal settlements, the settlement contains high levels of drug abuse, violence, gangsterism, crime and, 60% unemployment.
Lucinda Evans started the organization to protect and empower abused women and children that were victims of domestic, sexual, and community violence. To date, the organization has staff and volunteers. It offers a youth protection program, female empowerment and support, an after-school educational program, an emergency safe house, and a search and rescue program.
