Ulwazi, “Knowledge” in isiXhosa, Educare, was opened in 1998 by founder Patiswa Patience Bangani in the community of Delft with the goal to educate, nurture and protect children from child abuse, drugs, and fight poverty.
The Early Childhood Development Center (ECD) provides preschool education, nurturing and care for children up to 6 years of age. Ulwazi Educare prepares children for their educational careers by following an ECD curriculum provided by Ikamva Labantu.
The preschool was started in the home of Patiswa. In 2010 funds were raised to provide shipping containers for the classrooms, which were very basic and not conducive to quality education.
On 3 September 2022, thanks to the very kind and generous Uthando donors, Ulwazi Educare opened their brand new, sustainable school building. Built by Natural Building Collective.
Using 1700 old car tyres, 6000 eco-bricks and 2000 glass bottles, this unique and beautiful school is truly a place of creativity, education and nurturing. Quality education in quality sustainable buildings.
