Uthando supporting farmers through PEDI
For the 2019 Soil Health Day workshop, Uthando supported 5 farmers to attend and learn about how to improve degraded soil by using the new principles of regenerative agriculture. The principles, such as covering soil, planting continuous cover crops, and not plowing the soil, has the ability to restore soil to its proper functioning when it was a virgin soil.
Zodidi Meke said of the day, “I learned the importance of the cover crops before in school, like legumes adding nitrogen to the soil and maintaining soil moisture, but I didn’t know how to practically use it all. I want to plant peas as a cover crop this winter, and even plant them with our vegetables. I hope doing this improves my yields like it did to the farmers who presented.”
